About us

A permanent home for Aligarians in the United Kingdom.

Secular, non-partisan, non-political and entirely volunteer-run — serving the educational, social, literary and cultural needs of alumni and friends of Aligarh Muslim University in Britain.

Sir Syed’s wager

In 1875 Sir Syed Ahmad Khan founded a school at Aligarh on a simple wager: that a community lifts itself through modern education, and that education does not require surrendering who you are. That school became the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College, and then Aligarh Muslim University.

Generations of its graduates have made their lives in Britain. Some came for postgraduate study and stayed. Some arrived with a suitcase and a professional qualification that took years to have recognised. Nearly all of them describe the same thing: an instant recognition when they meet another Aligarian.

This association exists to turn that recognition into something durable — a body that gathers the community, records its history in Britain, and sends real support back to the university that made it.

We take no political position and align with no party. Membership is open to every graduate of AMU, and to friends and supporters of the Aligarh movement, regardless of faith or background.
